Car Insurance MINI (Car Insurance). Pontiac Montana overheating?Pontiac Montana overheating? I have a 2001 Pontiac Montana with a 3.4L V6 and it will overheat when the car is NOT moving only. The Temperature stays normal when moving but it will creep up if stopped. It had an overheating problem in the past and had a rebuilt motor put in it. Im thinking it maybe the thermostat but I am not sure if that's the problem. Is it the thermostat or something else? Check to see if the electric fans are coming on when it gets hot. You can test them to see if they work at all by turning on the A/C. An old radiator could be the problem too. You get better airflow through it when you're moving so it works better then. Probably the water pump. If the thermostat was stuck open=it wouldn't overheat; if it was stuck closed=it wouldn't cool down while air is passing through the rad while driving. MINI . How to Replace the Thermostat in a 2003 Chevy ImpalaThe thermostat is a little device that helps keep your engine at optimal operating temperature. Located near the top of the Impala's engine block, the thermostat is essentially a heat-activated valve that opens and closes as needed to let coolant from the radiator flow into the engine and keep it at the proper temperature. Like all car parts, a thermostat will not last forever, and will need to be replaced periodically, a not difficult or particularly expensive process. Difficulty:Moderate Instructions Things You'll Need Ratchet and socket set Flat-bladed screwdriver Clean container Scraper tool or razor blade Thermostat gasket Gasket sealant Replacement thermostatSuggest EditsItem AddWhy is it necessary?Done Step by Step : 1 Find the thermostat housing. Follow the largest hose at the top of the Impala's radiator to where to it connects to a removable housing at the top of the engine block. The thermostat is located underneath this housing. 2 Loosen the clamps on the coolant hose attached to the thermostat housing. Use your flat-bladed screwdriver. Place your clean container under the hose to catch any coolant that leaks out, then remove the hose from the thermostat housing. 3 Allow the coolant to drain into the container, then set it to the side. You will pour this coolant back into the radiator at the end of this process. 4 Loosen the bolts securing the thermostat housing to the engine block with your ratchet and sockets. Then remove the housing to expose the thermostat. 5 Remove and discard the thermostat. But first note how the thermostat is oriented in its setting, as you will need to install the new thermostat in the exact same manner. 6 Remove any remnants of the old thermostat gasket from the Impala's engine block and the thermostat housing. Use a razor blade or scraper tool to do this. It is important for both surfaces to be as clean as possible to ensure that no coolant will leak around the new seal. 7 Apply a layer of gasket sealant to the bottom of the Impala's thermostat housing. Press the new thermostat gasket firmly against the sealant so that it sticks in place. Place the housing to the side so that the gasket and sealant are facing up. 8 Install the new thermostat into the setting, making sure it is oriented as you noted in Step 5. 9 Replace the thermostat housing over the new thermostat and tighten the bolts down firmly with your ratchet and socket. Connect the Impala's coolant hose back to the thermostat housing and tighten down the clamp with your flat-bladed screwdriver. Refill the radiator with the coolant you allowed to drain out in Step 3. The Impala's new thermostat is now ready for operation.
MINI . How to Replace a Buick Century ThermostatSince the Buick Century first entered the automotive market in 1936, it's been available on and off with many body styles and engine sizes. The diversity of this vehicle means that many people have chosen the Century for many different reasons. However, even if you choose to drive an older V8 Century from the first 6 years it was on the market or you choose to drive the tamer V6 models commonly available today, you'll be able to follow the same process for changing out the thermostat. Difficulty:Moderately Easy Instructions Things You'll Need Buick Century thermostat Screwdriver Adjustable wrench PVC gasket maker Step by Step : 1 Find the thermostat housing by first locating the hose that is connected to the top of the Buick's radiator. The other end of the radiator connects to the housing. The thermostat is located inside of the housing. 2 Remove the radiator hose from the thermostat housing by loosening the metal band clamp that squeezes the radiator hose around the thermostat housing. Once loosened, the hose can be pulled off of the housing. 3 Remove the two bolts that hold the thermostat housing on the intake manifold of the Century by using an adjustable wrench. Keep the bolts; replacements are not included with the new thermostat. Lift the housing off of the intake manifold. 4 Pull the thermostat out of the intake manifold. It is not bolted in place. Pull the old thermostat gasket off of the intake manifold, and discard it. 5 Place the new thermostat into the intake manifold. The orientation of the thermostat is important. Note which side should be placed inside of the manifold to ensure that the thermostat works properly. 6 Place PVC gasket maker around the thermostat on the machined lip of the manifold (location typically covered by the thermostat housing.) Allow the PVC to dry for approximately 10 minutes, and then bolt the thermostat housing back onto the intake manifold. 7 Replace the radiator hose by slipping it back onto the thermostat housing and tightening the band clamp. Tips & Warnings You can avoid using PVC gasket maker if you purchase a gasket designed for your year Buick Century. Check the thermostat housing for fluid leaks once the Buick has been heated to operating temperature. If there are any leaks, tighten the thermostat housing. The brake pedal pushes against another piston in a cylinder located under the hood of your car. This is called the master cylinder, and it is filled with a liquid called brake fluid. 3. When the piston in the master cylinder is pushed by your brake pedal, it forces the brake fluid out of the master cylinder into tubes called brake lines, which run to each wheel of your car. MINI . What is the basic theory of heat transfer?
Ford ZX2. * 4. The wheel has either a disc brake or a drum brake. To keep it simple, I'll just look at disc brakes here. (Drum brakes work on the same general principles; see Chapter 10.) A disc brake is composed of a flat steel disc (surprise!) sandwiched between a pair of calipers, as shown in Figure 4-13. These calipers contain one or more little pistons that are forced into the disc by the brake fluid. Part II: What Makes It Go?. Figure 4-13: Atypical disc brake. 5. Brake pads located between the disc and the pistons grab the disc with their rough asbestos surfaces and force the disc to stop turning. This forces the wheel to stop turning. When the wheels stop turning, the car comes to a stop. 6. MINI . Why your car take of with a lil jerk?

Four-wheel disc brakes are standard on most new vehicles. Other vehicles have disc brakes on the front wheels and drum brakes on the rear wheels. A few older cars have drum brakes all around. Chapter 10 tells you all about both kinds of brakes and how power brakes and parking brakes work, and Chapter 18 shows you how to check the brake system on your car to see whether it's in good shape and how to do simple brake work. Now that you've got the general picture of how the various systems in your car work together, the rest of this part goes into detail about each system. Then Part III shows you how to keep each automotive system functioning smoothly with simple maintenance and easy repairs. If your car is behaving erratically, check out Chapter 20 for a guide to various symptoms and what they mean. If you encounter something that you can't handle, Chapter 22 tells you how to find a good service facility and become its favorite customer. MINI .
